voestalpine deploys four Liebherr LH 150 T material handlers in Austria
en.Wedoany.com Reported - voestalpine has deployed four Liebherr LH 150 T portal industrial E material handlers at its Linz plant in Austria, each with an operating weight of 210 tons and a working radius of 32 meters. As part of the greentec steel programme, the global steel and technology group is accelerating the transformation of its steel production, with electric arc furnaces set to begin operations at the Linz and Donawitz plants in 2027. At the Linz plant, these four machines will play a key role in ensuring a reliable supply of scrap for the new electric arc furnace. Two material handlers are already in operation, with the remaining two scheduled for commissioning later this year.
These four Liebherr LH 150 T portal industrial E material handlers now dominate the scrap yard at voestalpine's Linz plant. Two are already operating on the east side of the plant, while the other two will be commissioned on the west side starting in September. As voestalpine transitions to low-carbon steel production, demand for scrap will increase significantly. The new electric arc furnace, powered by green electricity, will rely on a continuous supply of processed scrap, making material handling a critical operational link. The electrically driven Liebherr machines ensure efficient operation of this supply chain while delivering low-emission performance.
The LH 150 T portal industrial E is responsible for unloading arriving train cars carrying steel scrap and loading scrap buckets that feed the electric arc furnace, helping maintain a continuous material flow. Equipped with a 440 kW electric drive and a 32-meter working radius, the machine achieves maximum throughput. Although the other two machines are expected to arrive in September, the first two already in operation have demonstrated reliable daily performance. Driven by a 440 kW motor, the LH 150 T portal industrial E combines high productivity with quiet, zero-emission operation.
The machine features a 16-meter straight boom combined with a curved boom, providing a working radius of up to 32 meters—a first for Liebherr material handlers. It is also equipped with a specially designed rail-mounted undercarriage, indicated by the "T" (Track) in the model designation. Combined with the portal chassis, this configuration allows train cars to pass beneath the machine during loading and unloading operations, maximizing operational efficiency. Each machine is customized to meet voestalpine's specific needs, with an operating weight of 210 tons. Advanced technologies such as Liebherr's energy recovery system and fiber optic cables integrated into the cable winding system further enhance efficiency, reliability, and handling performance.
The delivery of the four LH 150 T portal industrial E material handlers marks a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between Liebherr and voestalpine. The last machine to be commissioned in Linz in September will be the 100th unit supplied by Liebherr to the company. The development and delivery of customized solutions highlight the close collaboration between the two companies, a partnership built on continuity, reliability, and a shared commitment to developing equipment concepts that meet specific operational needs.
