en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones, Indotel) has authorized Swordfish Infrastructure to operate in the Dominican Republic to develop a new submarine cable system, with an initial investment exceeding $500 million.

The authorization was formalized through Resolution No. DE-083-2026 issued by Indotel's Executive Board on June 23, 2026, which registered the company in the special registry, allowing it to operate private telecommunications transmission services nationwide in the Dominican Republic. The company also requested that data submitted to the authorities be kept confidential for a certain period.

According to the resolution, Swordfish Infrastructure is authorized to install and operate submarine cable systems that will land at Cabeza de Toro in the El Salado district of Verón Punta Cana, La Altagracia Province. This location will be developed into Google's eighth digital exchange port and the first of its kind in Latin America.

The Swordfish system plans to install four new international submarine cables. In the first phase, two submarine cables will be deployed, directly connecting the Dominican Republic to the United States, specifically linking two Google Cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia.

The project will establish the country's first international submarine cable loop to the U.S. mainland, significantly enhancing data transmission capacity and strengthening the resilience of national digital services. As part of the project development, a 7,000-square-meter building will be constructed to house the multinational company's operations.
