en.Wedoany.com Reported - Earthrise Energy's Archtop solar project in Illinois has recently entered commercial operation, with an installed capacity of 270 MW AC. The project connects to the grid by utilizing the transmission lines of an existing natural gas peaker plant, thereby avoiding the typical multi-year wait in the renewable energy project interconnection queue.

Earthrise Energy brings its 270 MW AC solar project in Illinois into operation

The independent power producer, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, includes Gibson City Solar 1 and Gibson City Solar 2 under its Archtop project. Instead of building new transmission lines, these facilities use the same interconnection point as the nearby Gibson City natural gas peaker plant and connect to the grid through the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) surplus interconnection capacity program. Earthrise believes that this shared infrastructure strategy can accelerate clean energy deployment amid continued growth in U.S. electricity demand.

In terms of operational model, the solar installation delivers power to the grid during periods of ample sunlight; when solar output declines or during peak demand, the natural gas plant can rapidly ramp up to maintain stable power supply. The company states that sharing existing transmission lines improves grid utilization and reduces the interconnection delays common to renewable energy projects.

Earthrise CEO Jeff Hunter noted that Illinois urgently needs new energy resources, and this project demonstrates that innovative use of existing infrastructure can accelerate deployment timelines while supporting the state's clean and reliable energy goals.

Scott Halleran, Vice President of Asset Management at the company, stated that early operational results reflect the expected coordination effect of this model, prioritizing solar power when available and supplementing output with the peaker plant during other periods. Earthrise plans to replicate this model at more locations in Illinois and is currently developing approximately 1.5 GW of new solar capacity using the same surplus interconnection capacity strategy. Planned projects include Northwest Solar and Glacier Moraine Solar in Cumberland and Coles counties, Plum Valley Solar and Pride of the Prairie Solar in Will County, and Tilton Solar in Vermilion County.
