Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 19, RWE has secured a contract through an EEG tender to construct a 60MW wind farm in Bedburg, Germany, on land previously used for opencast mining. Construction is set to begin this month, marking a new phase of renewable energy development in the region.

The Bedburg 3 wind farm, a joint effort between RWE and the city of Bedburg, will bring the total wind power capacity operated by the partners in the area to 156MW. The ownership structure mirrors earlier projects, with RWE holding a 51% stake and Bedburg owning 49%.

RWE will contribute 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour generated to local communities. This initiative is expected to generate up to €250,000 annually, primarily supporting Bedburg, with a portion also allocated to the neighboring city of Jüchen, fostering regional benefits.

Katja Wünschel, chief executive of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, stated: "According to the motto all good things come in threes, I am very pleased that we are quickly realising another wind farm together with the city of Bedburg. The common goal of expanding wind energy and using the ideal site conditions on the recultivated area are the basis for our long-standing and trusting cooperation, from which all Bedburgers benefit."

Construction activities will commence in April 2025, starting with road development to facilitate the delivery of large components. The recultivated land will undergo vibratory tamping compaction to enhance stability. Foundation work is scheduled for the summer months, ensuring steady progress.

The wind farm will consist of nine turbines, which will connect to the public grid through existing electrical infrastructure at RWE Power’s Garzweiler opencast mine. Full commissioning of the final turbine is planned for the second half of 2026, completing the project’s timeline.

This development strengthens Bedburg’s role in sustainable energy and supports the broader adoption of wind power in Germany. The collaboration between RWE and Bedburg highlights a shared commitment to leveraging local resources for community and environmental benefits.
