en.Wedoany.com Reported - Microsoft Germany has signed a conditional purchase agreement to acquire land in Grevenbroich, Germany, and is considering expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence data center network in the Rhenish mining area. This potential development is subject to several prerequisites, including the city of Grevenbroich developing a specific development plan for the site.

If the project is approved to proceed, Grevenbroich will become a new node in Microsoft's planned cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure cluster in North Rhine-Westphalia. Agnes Heftberger, CEO of Microsoft Germany, stated that this move underscores the strategic importance of the region for Microsoft's digital infrastructure layout.

The planned data center will adopt Microsoft's latest technologies, including systems designed to reduce energy and water consumption. One of the core highlights is the next-generation data center cooling system, which operates without relying on water evaporation. This system circulates cooling water in a closed loop, significantly reducing additional water demand after the initial filling.

Additionally, since the end of 2025, Microsoft's global power demand of 40 gigawatts has been met through renewable energy purchase agreements—a milestone announced in February 2026. These agreements inject more renewable electricity into the grid, promote the decarbonization of power supply, and drive investment, employment, and infrastructure development.

Klaus Krützen, Mayor of Grevenbroich, noted that this planned investment is a significant boon for the entire city and the broader Rhenish region. He emphasized that such projects demonstrate the development of new digital infrastructure, creating new opportunities and added value during the regional structural transformation process.
