en.Wedoany.com Reported - Maersk has announced an increase in emergency surcharges for cargo shipped from the Indian subcontinent to various markets in Latin America. These new rates, designed to address current logistical challenges, will affect trade flows on both the East and West Coasts of the South American continent, as well as the Caribbean and Central America.

On routes connecting the East Coast of South America, the surcharge increases take effect from July 25, 2026, with specific amounts varying by port of origin. For cargo from Northwest India and Pakistan, the surcharge is $3,000 for a 20-foot dry container and $2,600 for a 40-foot container. For cargo from South and East India, the surcharge rises to $3,200 for 20-foot and $3,000 for 40-foot containers. For shipments from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, the surcharges are $2,100 and $1,900, respectively. In all cases, the surcharge for 40-foot reefer containers is the highest on this route, ranging between $3,700 and $3,800.

For routes destined for the West Coast of South America, the surcharge also takes effect on July 25, 2026. For Northwest India and Pakistan, small and large containers are charged $3,750 and $3,550, respectively; from South and East India, both sizes are uniformly set at $3,950; and from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, the charges are $2,850 and $2,650, respectively. However, for specific ports in Puerto Rico and Colombia, the implementation of the same rates will be delayed by two weeks, taking effect on August 4, 2026. For 40-foot reefer containers shipped to the entire western region, the surcharge ranges from $3,950 to $4,550.

Maersk clarified that these emergency surcharges apply not only to standard dry containers but also, at the same amounts, to special equipment (such as open-top or flat-rack containers), customer-owned containers, and shut-down reefer containers used for transporting ordinary dry cargo. The company reminded that the final implementation of the surcharges is subject to regulatory review and approval by relevant countries, and will be directly reflected on customer invoices.
