en.Wedoany.com Reported - At the "Biofuels in the Shipping Industry" seminar held in Istanbul, Arkas Bunker and DB Tarımsal Enerji demonstrated how Turkey, with its domestic production capacity, certified supply chain, and practical operational experience, can become a potential regional hub for sustainable marine fuels. This context stems from the global shipping industry entering a critical phase of transitioning to low-carbon fuels, with biofuels considered one of the most practical and immediately deployable solutions.
Carbon regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union are reshaping the shipping landscape across multiple dimensions, including freight costs, route planning, customer preferences, and exporter competitiveness, with fuel carbon intensity becoming a key industry determinant. Discussions noted that the fuel transition is no longer driven solely by environmental factors.
DB Tarımsal Enerji converts waste vegetable oil collected in Turkey into certified marine biofuels, achieving emission reductions of up to 93.7%. Arkas Bunker reported that it has successfully completed over 60 bunkering operations across 32 vessel types, supplying more than 15,000 tons of biofuel, corresponding to a reduction of 14,500 tons of emissions. The company stated that its biofuel infrastructure, products, and regulatory framework are all in place.
