en.Wedoany.com Reported - Brazil is set to become the first country in South America to invest in high-speed rail, planning to build a line connecting Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Campinas. The trains are designed to reach speeds of up to 350 km/h, covering a total route length of approximately 510 kilometers, with an investment ranging from $10 billion to $20 billion. Once operational, the road journey that currently takes several hours is expected to be reduced to about 1.5 hours, making this South America's first high-speed railway.
Currently, the main highways between these three major cities are chronically congested, with a large number of passengers relying on domestic flights. The Brazilian government is promoting this railway project to provide a fast, high-capacity alternative for this high-traffic corridor, alleviate road congestion, and modernize railway infrastructure in line with international standards. The high-speed trains will incorporate the latest operational and safety technologies to ensure efficient and reliable service.
According to the project plan, construction is expected to officially begin in 2027 after the completion of the design and preparation phases. Brazilian authorities believe that this infrastructure will significantly improve connectivity among the three economic hubs, reduce dependence on road transport, and thereby impact people's travel and quality of life.
