en.Wedoany.com Reported - Alterra Energy LLC, Technip Energies N.V., and Neste Oyj have formed an alliance to commercially launch Nerea, a modular thermochemical liquefaction technology for recycling waste plastics.

The alliance stated that this technology aims to help waste and recycling companies, refining and petrochemical enterprises, and other project developers "scale up circular plastic production with greater predictability." The three companies noted that global plastic production continues to grow, while regulatory developments in Europe and other regions are driving stronger demand for recycled and circular feedstocks.

Based on a cooperation agreement signed by the three parties in November 2024, Nerea integrates Alterra's thermochemical liquefaction technology, Neste's chemical recycling expertise, and Technip Energies' engineering, project delivery, and modularization capabilities. The Alterra technology installed at the Akron plant has been in continuous commercial operation for over five years, processing real-world waste plastic streams.

The alliance stated that Nerea adopts a standardized modular design to minimize upfront investment, reduce project complexity, and provide greater certainty in cost and timeline. A Nerea plant can convert heterogeneous and hard-to-recycle waste plastics into high-quality feedstocks needed by the petrochemical industry.

Alterra CEO Fred Schmuck said that Nerea reflects the shared vision of the three companies to make circular solutions easier to deploy at an industrial scale. By combining proven technology, industrial expertise, and a standardized delivery model, it helps remove barriers that have traditionally hindered the growth of chemical recycling. Neste Senior Vice President Lars Peter Lindfors noted that the recently commissioned upgrade unit at Neste's Porvoo refinery in Finland is the largest in the world by capacity, and the company knows how to convert low-quality feedstocks into high-quality solutions, looking forward to supporting industry scaling through robust and easily deployable technology to meet growing demand for liquefied waste plastics, both for itself and others. Technip Energies Senior Vice President Julie Cranga stated that through Nerea, the partners have integrated proven technology, feedstock expertise, and industrial delivery into a standardized product ready for large-scale deployment, now offering Nerea to customers to provide greater predictability and performance in development, investment, and operational phases, accelerating chemical recycling globally.
