Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 21, Bp Plc has initiated liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, located offshore Senegal and Mauritania. This development enhances global LNG supplies, supporting energy markets as demand grows.

On Thursday, bp and its partner Kosmos Energy announced that approximately 174,000 cubic meters of LNG was loaded onto the vessel British Sponsor from a floating LNG facility positioned 10 kilometers off the West African coast. This milestone marks bp’s third upstream project launch this year, as the company seeks to increase its oil and gas output.

The $4.8 billion GTA project is projected to produce around 2.4 million tons of LNG annually. This additional supply is significant for Europe, which aims to rebuild its gas reserves ahead of the upcoming heating season. bp stated: “This first cargo from Mauritania and Senegal marks a significant new supply for global energy markets.”

According to ship tracking data, the British Sponsor has not yet updated its destination from the GTA terminal. Kosmos Energy noted that a second LNG carrier is stationed near the facility, ready to load another cargo, indicating preparations for ongoing shipments.

The GTA project, which faced several years of delays, is expected to contribute to economic development in Senegal and Mauritania. By establishing a new energy export stream, the initiative supports local economies while addressing global energy needs.

The launch of LNG shipments from GTA reflects bp’s commitment to expanding its energy portfolio. The project strengthens the company’s role in meeting international demand for cleaner-burning fuels, while also fostering growth opportunities in the host nations. As operations continue, the GTA project is poised to play a key role in the global LNG market.
