en.Wedoany.com Reported - Microsoft has decided to accelerate its timeline for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography (PQC), a move aimed at helping organizations start upgrading their encryption systems earlier. Mark Russinovich, Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Azure, stated that the accelerated plan is intended to enable organizations to begin the transition process with greater confidence than previously expected.

For a long time, post-quantum cryptography planning was viewed as a long-term issue, but advances in quantum research have changed this perception. Quantum computers capable of breaking current cryptography may arrive sooner than anticipated, and governments such as those of the United States and France have issued guidelines requiring high-risk systems to adopt quantum-safe encryption by 2030.

Microsoft has responded to these changes by accelerating its Quantum Safe Program (QSP), with the goal of adopting PQC across its products and services by 2029. The company has incorporated PQC requirements into its Secure Future Initiative (SFI), ensuring that the rigor of quantum-safe preparation aligns with other critical security objectives.

The accelerated plan means advancing key engineering work to adopt new standards earlier and initiate modernization before the widespread impact of quantum computing. Priorities include modernizing network cryptography, building cryptographic agility for stored data, and modernizing the cryptographic trust chain.

This acceleration does not change the primary challenge facing organizations: identifying and updating the cryptographic technologies already in place within their systems. Microsoft simplifies this process by adopting an "inventory-first" approach, helping organizations identify, prioritize, and modernize their cryptographic dependencies.

Organizations that start with discovering and managing their cryptographic lifecycle may find existing vulnerabilities requiring immediate attention, regardless of quantum risks. Additionally, preparation for quantum-safe encryption provides immediate value by enhancing long-term resilience.

Microsoft's Quantum Safe Program is part of a broader effort to strengthen long-term resilience in areas such as identity, infrastructure, data, and supply chain security. The goal is clear: ensure that Microsoft's platforms and services can rapidly adopt new encryption standards as they mature, enabling organizations to advance at the same pace without disrupting their operations.

Through this proactive approach, Microsoft aims to mitigate future quantum risks while providing organizations with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the evolving threat landscape.
