en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 6, GYSEV advanced the manufacturing of 11 Stadler FLIRT intercity electric multiple units (EMUs), with final assembly underway at the Siedlce plant in Poland. This intercity train project marks Hungary's first procurement of new intercity EMUs in approximately 30 years. After the body painting was completed at the Szolnok plant in Hungary, the units were successively transported to Poland for subsequent assembly.
This batch of intercity trains consists of five-car dual-voltage EMUs with a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h, and will obtain operating permits for both Hungary and Austria in the future. According to the plan, vehicle testing is scheduled to commence in August 2026, conducted simultaneously in Romania, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. The first trains are expected to arrive in Hungary by the end of 2026, entering local testing and certification procedures.
GYSEV plans to deploy these intercity trains for services connecting Sopron, Szombathely, and Budapest. The vehicles are expected to gradually enter passenger service starting in 2027, with full fleet operation achieved by the summer of 2028. GYSEV currently operates 20 FLIRT vehicles, while Hungary's MÁV has 123 units of the same series. As the new intercity trains enter the assembly phase, subsequent work will focus on vehicle testing, cross-border certification, passenger service configuration, and operational scheduling preparation.
