en.Wedoany.com Reported - Topsoe and Sasol have entered into a single licensing agreement with SUSTAERO to provide integrated Gas-to-Liquids (G2L™) process technology for a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in Canada. The technology solution integrates Topsoe's hydrogen production, gas reforming, and hydroprocessing units with Sasol's Fischer-Tropsch and processing technologies under a single licensing framework.
The planned facility will produce SAF from woody waste, with an initial capacity of 3,200 barrels per day, with potential for expansion to approximately three times that volume. SUSTAERO plans to make a final investment decision in 2028, with operations expected to commence in 2031.
The G2L™ process is positioned as an end-to-end e-fuels solution, capable of converting renewable feedstocks such as gasified biomass or hydrogenated captured carbon dioxide into e-fuels, aiming to optimize hydrogen utilization, reduce carbon footprint, and increase yield. The agreement comes amid rising demand for mature SAF technologies. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects SAF production to reach 1.9 million tons, up from 1 million tons in 2024, but the article notes this still represents only about 0.6% of global aviation fuel production. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency's (IEA) net-zero emissions scenario indicates that SAF must cover over 10% of aviation fuel by 2030 to potentially achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
