en.Wedoany.com Reported - Proton VPN has urgently deployed 89 new servers in Brazil to address network overload caused by live streaming of the 2026 World Cup. The Swiss privacy service provider completed the expansion within a week, as existing Brazilian servers could not handle the massive traffic pressure from international users bypassing geo-restrictions to watch matches. The surge in traffic was particularly pronounced during Brazil's national team games, leading to connection interruptions for some users.
Proton VPN noted that the traffic overload was primarily due to the Brazilian YouTube channel CazeTV broadcasting the entire tournament for free, attracting numerous overseas users to route their network traffic through Brazil via VPN to unlock geo-restricted streams. This surge in demand forced the engineering team to take emergency action before Brazil's match against Norway, working overnight to ensure network capacity.
Proton VPN General Manager David Peterson confirmed the emergency deployment on social media: "The ProtonVPN infrastructure team worked overnight to reinforce servers in Brazil. Adding 59 more on top of the 30 already increased this week." He assured users that the network was ready and that they could connect to watch subsequent matches. The company's official account also responded, stating that servers face pressure every time Brazil plays, and additional servers have been added to cope.
The scale of the server upgrade reflects the enormous bandwidth demands of 4K live streaming. The additional servers directly increased the overall regional bandwidth, reducing the load on individual servers and thus minimizing the likelihood of connection lag. Analysts pointed out that most free VPN plans restrict access to South American servers, and users may need a paid subscription for a stable connection.
