en.Wedoany.com Reported - Philippine telecom operator PLDT announced on Wednesday that its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications has completed a field trial of Nokia's local-breakout roaming technology, aimed at improving users' data roaming experience abroad.
The trial utilized Nokia's Core SaaS Edge for Roaming solution, which was showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year.
The Edge for Roaming solution enables local breakout, allowing mobile data to be routed through the local network without being fully backhauled to the user's home network. Locally routed data traffic delivers lower latency, faster browsing speeds, and better application responsiveness. Local breakout enables the home operator to maintain full control over policies, billing, and user services, even when traffic is transmitted via roaming partners.
PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head Menardo G. Jimenez, Jr. stated that the technology will improve the customer experience for Filipinos traveling abroad. In a statement, he said that Smart continues to invest in exploring innovations such as local-breakout technology as part of a broader commitment to always provide excellent service to customers, wherever they are—not only in the Philippines but around the world.
