en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port Authority of Algeciras Bay (APBA) recently formally submitted the "2030 Strategic Plan and 2040 Vision" to institutional representatives and the port community. The document establishes competitiveness, decarbonization, and social responsibility as the core pillars for the development of the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa over the next decade.

Approved by the APBA Board of Directors in April of this year, this roadmap aims to address changes in international maritime trade, the geopolitical landscape, energy transition, and digital transformation. Its goal is to consolidate the two ports' positions as advanced intercontinental logistics platforms, enhancing operational efficiency, sea-land connectivity, port space utilization, and port-city integration.

The document includes 14 strategic objectives, 60 tactical objectives, and 215 operational objectives, developed jointly by the port community and institutions through a participatory process.

APBA President Gerardo Landaluce stated at the presentation that the participation of over one hundred professionals enabled the creation of this open and flexible document, designed to adapt to current and future challenges. The plan incorporates extensive input from the port community and institutions, with technical support from KPMG.

14 Strategic Objectives of the APBA 2030 Strategic Plan

Energy transition is one of the most prominent aspects of the plan. Landaluce noted that investments are expected to exceed €7 billion in projects within and outside the port area, as well as those related to the Bay of Algeciras and the province of Cádiz.

The APBA President stated that the goal is to support and promote industrial and logistics projects related to new fuels, consolidating the leading position of Algeciras and Tarifa as energy and logistics hubs.

Landaluce also warned that limited electricity supply capacity is one of the main constraints for the development of these projects, calling for strengthened energy infrastructure in the region, province, and Andalusia to avoid losing strategic investments related to the energy transition.

The competitiveness pillar includes several actions aimed at increasing the capacity and efficiency of container terminals, including the expansion of Total Terminal International Algeciras (TTIA), with an estimated investment of €150 million, as well as improving draft and modernizing APM Terminals Algeciras to serve a new generation of larger container ships.

APBA has identified over €7 billion in investments related to the energy transition and is demanding increased power capacity to make these projects viable.

These actions are part of a broader strategy involving the implementation of Plan Hércules to transform Strait traffic, expanding railway infrastructure, promoting Algeciras-Zaragoza rail-road transport, and fully digitizing port processes through artificial intelligence and advanced technologies.

Landaluce defined the strategic document as a participatory and open roadmap, designed to evolve with changes in the economic and geopolitical environment, emphasizing that its main value lies in being a cohesive element for the entire port community.

The strategy also includes decarbonization targets, developing international green corridors, deploying Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems, reducing emissions, producing renewable energy, and strengthening the relationship between the ports and the urban environment. These elements are aligned with the "Strategic Framework for the Port System of General Interest" (Marco Estratégico del Sistema Portuario de Interés General) and European transport and sustainable development policies.
