Pico Technology @ IMS 2026: 16-bit and 8-bit signal analysis using PicoScope 5000E

The PicoScope 5000E series is described as the industry's first four-channel 16-bit USB oscilloscope, offering 16-bit resolution on all four channels with a bandwidth of up to 200 MHz. The Plus models in the series feature switchable resolution technology, allowing engineers to perform high-precision measurements in 16-bit mode or switch to 8-bit mode for a bandwidth of up to 500 MHz. The oscilloscope achieves a sampling rate of up to 2.5 GS/s in 16-bit mode and up to 5 GS/s in 8-bit mode, enabling simultaneous capture of low-level analog signals and high-speed digital events.

During the booth demonstration, Ben Ellis from Pico Technology compared 16-bit and 8-bit waveform acquisition using an I²C serial data stream. By zooming in on the ringing edges of the signal, the demonstration revealed subtle waveform details and signal integrity effects uncovered by the additional vertical resolution in 16-bit mode, which are difficult to observe on traditional 8-bit oscilloscopes. The switching between the two operating modes intuitively illustrates the trade-off between measurement resolution and bandwidth, allowing engineers to choose between high-precision analysis or higher-speed measurements based on actual needs. This series is suitable for applications such as embedded system development, digital design verification, and signal integrity analysis.
