en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Indian Prime Minister launched the next phase of the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN) and inaugurated the new terminal building at Jodhpur Airport, with senior central and state officials in attendance, underscoring the government's emphasis on expanding regional air connectivity and infrastructure development. Launched in October 2016, the UDAN scheme has operationalized 669 routes, connecting 95 airports, heliports, and water aerodromes, benefiting approximately 16.6 million passengers.
On March 25, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the revised UDAN scheme, allocating ₹290 billion over the next decade to accelerate aviation-led development and advance the "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision. Key highlights of the revised scheme include: an investment of ₹121.59 billion to develop 100 existing unused airstrips, ₹25.77 billion for regional airport operations and maintenance support, ₹36.61 billion to construct 200 modern helipads, and a ₹100.43 billion viability gap funding to sustain regional airline operations. The scheme also encourages the introduction of indigenous aircraft and helicopters, including the HAL Dhruv and Dornier platforms for underserved regions.
The new Jodhpur terminal, built by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of ₹4.8 billion, spans 23,342 square meters and can handle 1,500 passengers during peak hours, with an annual passenger capacity of approximately 2 million. Facilities include 20 check-in counters, advanced security equipment, a modern baggage handling system, and six boarding bridges. The apron can accommodate 11 A-321 aircraft and one ATR-72 aircraft, along with approximately 320 parking spaces. The existing terminal, with an annual passenger capacity of about 400,000, had reached saturation, necessitating expansion to meet future demand.
The new terminal incorporates energy-efficient systems, water conservation measures, and green building practices, aiming for a five-star GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) rating. The architectural design draws inspiration from Rajasthan's royal heritage, showcasing local cultural features while providing modern passenger amenities.
