en.Wedoany.com Reported - Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has resumed production at its Al Taweelah refinery in Abu Dhabi, which had been shut down since March 2026 due to an Iranian attack on the Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi.
EGA stated that the refinery's output is expected to reach 50% of plant capacity within days. The company aims to have the technical capability to achieve full alumina production by the end of the year. However, further ramp-up at the Al Taweelah alumina refinery will depend on supply chain factors and optimization of its alumina procurement strategy. The increase in aluminum production at the adjacent Al Taweelah smelter does not rely on the refinery reaching full capacity.
In 2025, the refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina, meeting 46% of EGA's alumina demand. Alumina is the raw material for smelters. Production of hydrate, the precursor to alumina, resumed at the plant on June 24, 2026.
EGA CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban stated that the production of the first alumina at the Al Taweelah alumina refinery is another significant milestone in restoring EGA's Al Taweelah site as one of the world's most important aluminum production bases. He also noted that the dedication and agility of the refinery team enabled them to reach this milestone safely and quickly.
The refinery is adjacent to the Al Taweelah smelter, supplying alumina via conveyor belts to a storage area and then to the smelter. The Al Taweelah alumina refinery began operations in 2019. In May 2026, EGA signed a high-level agreement with ADNOC Logistics & Services to explore collaborative efforts to enhance supply chain resilience in the aluminum industry.
