en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function (Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública) has launched a public consultation on the proposal submitted by the European Commission, aimed at consolidating the European continent's industrial capabilities in the semiconductor sector, reducing dependence on third countries, and strengthening the resilience of supply chains in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced computing, telecommunications, and automotive.

Spanish Government Launches Public Consultation on Future European Chips Act 2.0

The new regulation is part of the "Digital Sovereignty Package" submitted by the EU on June 3, representing an evolution of the first version of the European Chips Act approved in 2023. The EU assessment considers the initial phase results positive but also identifies significant shortcomings that need to be addressed through the second version of the regulation, including Europe's heavy dependence on third countries for semiconductor design and manufacturing, as well as limited capacity to respond to potential supply crises.

The proposal marks a shift in approach from the original regulation: while the first Chips Act focused on stimulating supply and attracting industrial investment, the future European Chips Act 2.0 also incorporates measures to increase European market demand for semiconductors and strengthen the EU's strategic position across the entire semiconductor value chain.

The proposal also outlines actions to promote production and industrialization, enhance research and innovation, ensure supply security, and improve the resilience of the European semiconductor ecosystem. The goal is to build a more competitive industry less vulnerable to geopolitical and commercial tensions that have constrained access to critical components in recent years. The EU believes that developing its own capabilities is essential to support the growth of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, or next-generation digital infrastructure, all of which require a stable supply of advanced chips.
