en.Wedoany.com Reported - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District, in partnership with the Town of East Hampton, recently completed dredging of the navigation channel at Lake Montauk Harbor, a busy waterway on eastern Long Island, New York. The project deepened the channel from -12 feet (approximately 3.7 meters) to approximately -17 feet (approximately 5.2 meters), significantly improving navigability.
The Lake Montauk Harbor channel dredging removed approximately 87,000 cubic yards (about 66,500 cubic meters) of sand and approximately 10,000 cubic yards (about 7,645 cubic meters) of clay. The deepened channel allows commercial vessels, recreational boats, and U.S. Coast Guard craft to navigate more safely.

The project was managed by the USACE New York District, with the contract awarded to H&L Contracting, LLC for $8.9 million. The Town of East Hampton, as the local project partner, contributed an additional $1.1 million. According to USACE, the sand from dredging was placed along the shoreline west of the entrance jetty, utilizing longshore currents for natural beach nourishment to restore eroded areas on the western shoreline. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) issued a permit modification allowing beneficial reuse of the dredged material. Clay material excavated from the channel was transported off-site for disposal.
Lake Montauk Harbor, located at the eastern tip of Long Island, New York, is a vital hub for fishing, boating, and commercial shipping in the region. Insufficient channel depth had long constrained the safe and efficient navigation of larger vessels. The completion of this dredging project not only enhances the harbor's infrastructure but also provides better support for the local fishing industry, tourism, and the Coast Guard's emergency response capabilities.
