en.Wedoany.com Reported - Standard Bank of South Africa has provided a $29 million procurement support arrangement for UK telecom tower operator Helios Towers, with funds to be used for the procurement and import of communication infrastructure and related services across multiple African markets. UK-based Helios Towers plans to continue advancing communication tower expansion, existing network densification, and connectivity enhancement in remote areas.New Standard Bank financing facility supports tower deployment in Africa - Helios Towers

This arrangement will primarily support the entry of equipment and services required for tower construction into African markets, while providing stable settlement conditions for cross-border procurement. UK-based Helios Towers can thereby procure communication infrastructure from suppliers across different countries and regions, aligning with local tower deployment and network expansion plans to shorten the lead time between equipment procurement, transportation, and project delivery.

UK-based Helios Towers operates one of Africa's largest independent communication tower platforms, leasing towers, sites, and supporting facilities to mobile network operators. Mobile operators do not need to build complete sites from scratch for each coverage expansion; instead, they can install communication equipment on existing towers, thereby accelerating network activation in new areas and enhancing existing network capacity.

Subsequent infrastructure construction will include adding new communication towers, increasing the density of existing sites, and supplementing network nodes in areas with weak communication services. Cities and towns with rapid population growth require additional sites to handle rising data traffic, while rural and remote areas with dispersed populations need expanded tower coverage radius to address insufficient mobile signals or lack of network access.

Network densification is not simply about increasing the number of towers; it also requires coordinating site selection, equipment installation, transmission access, and ongoing operations. Once new towers are operational, mobile operators can deploy base station equipment at the sites and connect to the backbone network via fiber optics, microwave, or other transmission methods. The procurement support obtained by UK-based Helios Towers will serve the continuous procurement of these infrastructure and related services.

This collaboration adopts a trade support approach linked to social objectives, with the core focus on expanding mobile network coverage in underserved markets and remote communities across Africa. Actual construction progress will be primarily reflected in the number of new towers added, the scale of existing site expansions, network activation in remote areas, and the delivery of supplier equipment.
