In Dormont Borough, Allegheny County, a grant of $2,694,306 and a loan of $6,205,694 will be used to replace approximately 575 lead and galvanized lead-impacted water service lines. Removing all lead components will directly improve water quality and ensure regulatory compliance. The loan interest terms are a fixed rate of 1.00% over 25.25 years. Pennsylvania State Senator Wayne Fontana and Representative Jen Mazzocco both stated that this investment will have a significant positive impact on the community.
In Cumberland County, the Silver Spring Water Treatment Plant will receive a grant of $2,447,879 and a loan of $27,758,121 to construct a new per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) treatment system. The upgrade will install new granular activated carbon filter vessels to comply with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency PFAS regulations taking effect in 2029, and will also include additional pumps, electrical systems, backup power, security, and stormwater improvements. The loan interest terms are 1.743% for the first five years and 2.179% for the remaining 20 years. Pennsylvania State Representative Thomas Kutz noted that this investment is crucial for approximately 85,000 people who rely on this treatment plant.
Pennsylvania American Water's Susquehanna Water Treatment Plant construction project in Harmony Township has received a $25,000,000 PENNVEST loan. Due to severe aging of the existing facility, a new water treatment plant will be built on company-owned land, serving over 4,200 customers. The loan interest terms are 1.00% for the first five years and 1.743% for the remaining 20 years. Pennsylvania State Senator Lisa Baker stated that this funding support will ensure safe drinking water for community households and bring long-term health and economic affordability benefits to 1,481 families.
Governor Josh Shapiro stated that every Pennsylvanian has a constitutional right to clean water, and PENNVEST is helping communities across the state make critical upgrades to ensure clean, safe, and reliable drinking water.
Since July 2024, PENNVEST has provided over $261.6 million in funding to Pennsylvania American Water, including $29 million in grants and $231 million in low-interest loans, to support water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the state.
