en.Wedoany.com Reported - Santiago J. Castellà, President of the Port of Tarragona (puerto de Tarragona), visited the Lleida City Council to introduce the Tarragona-Lleida Working Group (Grupo de Trabajo Tarragona-Lérida) under the Barcelona - Catalunya Centre Logístic, aiming to promote logistics and industrial development in the region.
The working group was publicly unveiled at the Barcelona International Logistics Exhibition (SIL), aiming to bring together 40 economic entities to explore regional synergies, drive logistics development in both areas, and strengthen ties between Lleida, Tarragona, and the Ebro region.
During the working meeting, Castellà, Lleida Mayor Félix Larrosa, and members of both teams discussed strategic issues, including regional and economic development matters related to logistics and reindustrialization. Castellà believes the alliance aims to consolidate Catalonia's leadership and position the northeastern Iberian Peninsula as a benchmark logistics region, strengthening the axis formed by Tarragona/Reus, Lleida, and Tortosa to complement and expand Barcelona's service capacity logistically, meeting high demand.
The main topic of the meeting was advancing the construction of a dry port in the Torreblanca Industrial Estate (polígono de Torreblanca) to promote rail transport, positioning Lleida as a continental-level hub logistics center for inbound and outbound goods in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, serving as a bridge between Catalonia and Aragon. The industrial estate covers a total area of over 328 hectares, of which more than 202 hectares will be allocated for new industrial and logistics land. The estate aims to attract companies requiring large industrial and logistics plots and includes a 135-hectare large plot that can be divided into at least three units of 40 hectares each based on future needs. The estate also reserves nearly 79 hectares for the future construction of a multimodal transport rail terminal, which will be connected to the railway line linking Lleida with the Port of Tarragona and the Port of Barcelona.
Additionally, Castellà and Larrosa met with representatives of five local agri-food companies at Mercolleida to strengthen ties with the Port of Tarragona. The company representatives all expressed interest in collaborating to create a freight station at the Torreblanca Industrial Estate and agreed that the project represents an opportunity for supply chain decarbonization and efficiency improvement.
