en.Wedoany.com Reported - Shareholders of the 900MW Waltrop Battery Energy Storage System (Waltrop BESS) project in Germany have approved key infrastructure works, with full construction scheduled to commence in the coming months. The project capacity allocation is as follows: Luxcara 520 MW, BKW 300 MW, and Trianel 80 MW.

Project shareholders stated that a clarification by the German Federal Network Agency (BnetzA) in May was a key factor, confirming that large-scale energy storage projects are exempt from grid fees from August 4, 2029, thereby ensuring the project's economic viability.

Following BnetzA's clarification, several large-scale battery energy storage projects in Germany have entered the final investment decision (FID), offtake and supply agreement, or construction phase. A review published last week showed battery energy storage projects and portfolios involving financing, offtakers, or suppliers totaling approximately 2 GWh, while another article from late June covered projects totaling around 2.5 GWh.

Two weeks ago, BW ESS announced that preliminary works for a project ultimately reaching 1 GW/5.7 GWh had commenced. BW ESS Managing Director Roberto Jimenez stated that the grid fee decision was a key factor in advancing its project, a view consistent with that of the Waltrop project shareholders.

Since the grid fee decision, Eco Stor completed financing and signed an offtake agreement for a project of approximately 700 MWh in June. In the same month, Flower reached offtake agreements with utility company Engie for two projects totaling 657 MWh, while Green Flexibility acquired a 2 GWh development portfolio. Since the grid fee announcement, these projects collectively represent progress for over 15 GWh of large-scale battery energy storage capacity.
