Siemens Mobility secures €3 billion Italo train order
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Siemens Mobility has signed an agreement with Italo holding company to supply 26 Velaro Multi System high-speed trains, with a total contract value of approximately €3 billion. These eight-car trainsets will be manufactured at the German plant in Krefeld, while subsequent long-term maintenance will be carried out at Siemens Mobility's depot in Dortmund.
Under the agreement, 26 trains are firm orders, with an additional 14 as optional orders, along with a 30-year full-service contract. Each train is designed for an operating speed of 320 km/h and offers approximately 440 seats. The trains feature a multi-system configuration, capable of operating under four different electrification systems: 1.5 kV and 3 kV DC, as well as 15 kV and 25 kV AC, providing Italo with greater operational flexibility across railway networks with varying power supply standards. Additionally, the trains are equipped with Starlink integrated antennas to provide satellite-based internet connectivity for passengers.
Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, stated that Italo holding company's decision demonstrates confidence in Siemens Mobility and the Velaro high-speed train platform. According to Siemens, Velaro trains operating internationally have accumulated over 3 billion kilometers in mileage and transported millions of passengers.
The full-service agreement covers 30-year maintenance of the entire fleet at Siemens Mobility's own depot in Dortmund. For digital services, the Railigent X platform, fleet monitoring tools, and AI-based applications will be deployed to collect train data and identify potential technical issues before they lead to failures, supporting predictive maintenance and enhancing fleet availability and operational efficiency. This contract links rolling stock production in Krefeld with long-term service capabilities in Dortmund, placing Siemens responsible for everything from new train delivery to full lifecycle support. Currently, the production start time and the date for the first trains to enter passenger service have not yet been announced.
