en.Wedoany.com Reported - GKN Aerospace has signed multiple agreements with Pratt & Whitney covering component repairs for the Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine program.

These agreements span the next 5-10 years and encompass over 20 different component types across three GKN MRO bases, including critical engine casings, structural parts, and rotating components for the PW1500G and PW1900G models. The PW1500G powers the Airbus A220, while the PW1900G is the sole engine option for Embraer's E-Jet series.

At its facility in Trollhättan, Sweden, GKN will utilize Directed Energy Deposition (DED) additive repair technology to repair outlet guide vane stators for the PW1500G and PW1900G. These stators are fixed aerodynamic vanes located directly behind the engine's fan or turbine stages. GKN states that DED technology, which replaces wear features on the engine by depositing material, is suitable for repairing highly engineered components. The company claims that previous methods could not repair such parts.

Gerald Coste, Senior Vice President of GKN Aerospace Repair Solutions, stated that by deploying advanced technologies like DED in Sweden and expanding composite and coating capabilities in Malaysia and San Diego, GKN has strengthened its position in next-generation repair solutions and ensured localized support where global GTF customers need it most.

At its facility in Johor, Malaysia (opened in 2022), GKN will support stator and stator assembly repairs. The company will also begin repairing GTF composite fan blades. Previously, GKN focused on providing low-pressure compressor component services for CFM56-5B, CFM56-7, and V2500 engines.

At its recently expanded San Diego MRO base, GKN will introduce thermal coating technology, as well as a new shot peening method developed for the GTF using advanced ultrasonic technology.

At the end of 2024, GKN opened a $55 million, 150,000-square-foot engine component repair facility in California, doubling its regional repair capacity. The facility supports both mature programs and new engines, including the GTF and LEAP engines.

The latest agreements further enhance GKN's capabilities in the United States. In April, the company signed a five-year agreement with Rolls-Royce to provide fan blade, fan disc, and annular filler repairs for RB211-535/535E4, Trent 800/800EP, and Trent 700 engines in San Diego.
