Over 10,000 cubic meters of concrete have been poured for this rail-line underpass, which is designed to accommodate large vehicles such as trucks, aiming to divert local traffic and eliminate delays caused by boom gate closures at the level crossing.
The level crossing involved in the project was closed and its boom gates removed at the end of 2024. In December 2024, a contract worth AUD 252 million was awarded to a consortium comprising John Holland Group, Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR), Metro Trains Melbourne, and the Level Crossing Removal Project.
Since late 2025, construction crews have been continuously carrying out earthworks and concrete pouring to lay the foundation for the underpass. The underpass will connect Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street with Cheltenham and Hammond roads.
The underpass provides a clearance of 5.4 meters under the railway bridge, accommodating trucks and high-sided vehicles. It will divert traffic from local streets and the Dandenong Central Business District, eliminating a cumulative 60 minutes of time lost due to boom gate closures during peak hours.
The Victorian Government has announced that the new road underpass will open in September 2026, two years earlier than originally planned. The removal of the Webster Street boom gates has enabled boom gate-free operation on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines since 2025.
