Japan is aggressively expanding its offshore wind power industry, with the Akita region playing a key role in the country's green transition. The Japanese government has designated Akita Port and Noshiro Port as official pre-assembly and operation and maintenance (O&M) ports. The region also boasts a substantial project pipeline, including the 845 MW Yurihonjo project, offering significant opportunities for large-scale development. During the visit, the delegation focused on examining the port's practical operational models for offshore wind projects. Located on the coast of the North Sea, the Port of Esbjerg is a key hub for Europe's offshore wind industry, with extensive experience in turbine pre-assembly, vessel scheduling, and O&M support.

The Akita region has a rich pipeline of offshore wind projects. The Yurihonjo project plans to install 65 turbines, each with a capacity of 13 MW, and is expected to commence operations in December 2030. Akita Port and Noshiro Port have been designated as the primary construction and O&M bases for the project. As Japan's domestic offshore wind installation targets gradually increase, the capacity and operational efficiency of port infrastructure will become critical factors for project advancement.

During the visit, the Akita regional delegation inspected the facilities and management systems of the Port of Esbjerg, focusing on its proven expertise in turbine component pre-assembly, large vessel berthing, and O&M personnel dispatch. This cooperation will help the Akita region enhance its port operations and support the construction of large-scale offshore wind projects. As planned, the two parties will sign a formal Memorandum of Cooperation during the Global Offshore Wind Summit in Japan in October.
