América Móvil CEO Daniel Hajj outlined this strategy during the second-quarter earnings call. He stated that the company is open to evaluating all acquisition opportunities but focuses on businesses that bring fiber optic customers and complement existing networks, such as Desktop and WOW Peru, thereby enabling the provision of additional services like prepaid and postpaid telephony to these customers.
This strategy will be limited to countries where América Móvil already operates and will support growth in the B2B sector, including small and medium-sized enterprises. Hajj said market consolidation will be an important factor.
In Brazil, the Desktop acquisition was announced in March, with the transaction valued at 4 billion Brazilian reais, including the debt of this São Paulo-based provider. Desktop has over 1.2 million customers in the fiber optic market. Claro has received approval from Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) but still needs approval from the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade) to complete the deal this year.
The WOW Peru acquisition was announced last Tuesday. Hajj stated that the company brings approximately 500,000 customers and over 3 million homes covered by fiber optic technology. BTG Pactual estimates that through this transaction, América Móvil's share of the Peruvian broadband market will rise from 27% to 39%.
Group leadership stated that the company must execute integration while maintaining current leverage targets and ensuring capital distribution to shareholders. When asked whether selling its stake in Verizon would balance this requirement, Hajj avoided making a commitment, saying he hopes to achieve self-sufficiency as much as possible.
Financially, América Móvil's second-quarter net revenue reached 241.1 billion Mexican pesos (approximately 70 billion Brazilian reais), up 3.1% year-over-year. On a constant currency basis, service revenue grew 5.1%. Adjusted EBITDA totaled 95.9 billion Mexican pesos (approximately 27.9 billion Brazilian reais), a nominal increase of 3.8% and a constant currency increase of 5.3%, driven by Brazilian operations. Net profit totaled 24.3 billion Mexican pesos (approximately 7 billion Brazilian reais), up 9.2% year-over-year, but BTG Pactual considered the performance below expectations. In Brazil, Claro's consolidated profit fell 8.3% year-over-year in the second quarter, slightly above 1 billion Brazilian reais.
