The project will be located at the Golden Triangle Industrial Park and is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2027, creating approximately 100 new jobs.
Aluminum Dynamics Inc. is the aluminum business subsidiary of Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI), an Indiana-based steel producer. Founded in 1993, SDI is known for its innovative "mini mill" model, which achieves low-cost, high-efficiency steel production by melting recycled scrap steel in electric arc furnaces. Aluminum Dynamics operates a 650,000-ton-per-year low-carbon recycled aluminum flat-rolled mill in Columbus, Mississippi. The mill commenced production in the summer of 2025 and is supported by two satellite recycled aluminum slab centers, one in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and the one announced in Mississippi. In the automotive market, Aluminum Dynamics has obtained qualification certifications from multiple automakers for its 5182 and 5754 alloy products and is conducting trials for 6000 series alloys.
The slab center will primarily utilize materials such as used beverage cans and other aluminum scrap to produce 180,000 metric tons of aluminum slabs annually. This project was previously planned for Arizona but was relocated to Mississippi due to disagreements with the state government. Steel Dynamics recorded a $16 million asset impairment charge in the second quarter of 2026 for this reason. The Mississippi Development Authority will provide funding support for road and railway infrastructure for the project, which will also benefit from tax incentives from the Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority. Lowndes County will also provide assistance for the project's implementation.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves stated that Aluminum Dynamics' decision to invest again in Mississippi demonstrates the state's leadership in advanced manufacturing. Aluminum Dynamics Operations Manager Devin Crawford expressed the company's eagerness to move forward with the project and thanked state and local leaders for their support. Meryl Fisackerly, President and CEO of the Golden Triangle Development Link, noted that the investment is the result of a strong local workforce, robust infrastructure, and the long-term commitment of partners.
This project represents the latest expansion of Steel Dynamics' aluminum operations in Lowndes County. With declining startup costs and improvements in utilization rates and yields in the second half of 2026, Aluminum Dynamics expects to begin product sales in the automotive sector by the end of 2026. The construction of this recycled aluminum slab center will further solidify the Golden Triangle region's position as a key base for advanced manufacturing in the United States.
