Metso receives approximately EUR 55 million smelting equipment order from Eti Bakir

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 7, Metso received an order from Turkish metals and fertilizer producer Eti Bakir to supply core direct reduction and smelting technology and equipment for the expansion project of its integrated fertilizer and metals production site in Mazidagi, Mardin Province. The order value is approximately EUR 55 million and has been booked in Metso's Minerals segment orders received in the third quarter of 2026. The contract includes a rotary kiln direct reduction system and a DRI smelting furnace, marking the first commercial-scale delivery of Metso's DRI Smelting Furnace technology.

The expansion targets leach residues generated from the existing hydrometallurgical process at the Mazidagi site. The new system will heat-treat, directly reduce, and smelt the residues, converting recoverable metals into hot metal while also producing a slag product. Metso's scope of supply includes basic engineering, equipment engineering, supply of key equipment, and on-site technical advisory services. The process system consists of an SL/RN Xtra rotary kiln pellet direct reduction unit, a 30 MVA Metso Outotec DRI Smelting Furnace, and a DRI hot-charging system.

The SL/RN Xtra rotary kiln handles the reduction stage, and the resulting direct reduced iron is fed directly into the 30 MVA smelting furnace via the hot-charging system. This process further converts the original leach residues at the Mazidagi site into usable iron and slag products. The order covers a continuous process chain from residue heat treatment and direct reduction to smelting, with the technology to be integrated directly into the existing integrated production site.

The Mazidagi site has previously adopted multiple pieces of Metso process equipment. Metso has already supplied a beneficiation plant, calcination units, gas cleaning units, a sulfuric acid plant, and a metals recovery leaching plant to the site. The newly added direct reduction and smelting system will continue processing leach residues downstream of the existing beneficiation, heat treatment, acid production, and hydrometallurgical metals recovery processes.

Metso confirmed that this project marks the first commercial-scale application of its DRI smelting furnace, following prior research and industrial validation of the technology. The order has entered the formal equipment supply stage, but Metso has not yet disclosed the equipment manufacturing lead time, on-site installation schedule, project commissioning date, or the annual hot metal production capacity after the expansion.
