Wedoany.com Report-May 26, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, stated on May 26, 2025, that Iran will not agree to temporarily halt uranium enrichment to secure a nuclear agreement with the United States. Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Baghaei also noted that no date has been set for the sixth round of negotiations with Washington, as Iran awaits further details from mediator Oman.
Members of the Iranian delegation leave the Omani embassy, where the fifth round of U.S.-Iran talks takes place, in Rome, Italy, May 23, 2025.
The ongoing talks between Tehran and Washington aim to address long-standing differences regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Baghaei firmly rejected suggestions that Iran might pause enrichment for three years to reach a deal, stating: “Iran will never accept that.” He also dismissed reports of a potential interim agreement, clarifying that no provisional deal is under consideration as a step toward a final resolution.
U.S. President Donald Trump commented on May 25, 2025, describing recent discussions with an Iranian delegation as “very good.” However, Baghaei emphasized Iran’s position, saying: “If there is goodwill from the American side, we are also optimistic, but if talks are aimed at curbing Iran’s rights then talks will get nowhere.” Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are solely for civilian purposes and seeks relief from economic sanctions affecting its oil industry.
The negotiations reflect significant priorities for both nations. The U.S. seeks to ensure Iran’s nuclear program does not lead to weapons development, which could impact regional stability. Iran, in turn, aims to protect its energy development rights while addressing economic challenges posed by sanctions. The discussions, mediated by Oman, continue to explore pathways to a mutually acceptable agreement.
Iran’s stance underscores its commitment to maintaining its nuclear program for peaceful energy needs, while the U.S. focuses on ensuring regional security. Both sides remain engaged in the process, with further talks anticipated as they work toward a sustainable resolution.
