en.Wedoany.com Reported - Entropy Inc. has completed construction, commissioning, and commenced commercial operations of the Glacier Cogeneration, Carbon Capture, and Storage Project (Glacier Phase 2) in Saddle Hills County, Alberta, Canada. The project includes a new 15-megawatt (MW) cogeneration unit and fully integrated carbon capture, transportation, and storage for approximately 30 MW of reciprocating engines.
Building on the earlier commercial capture system, Glacier Phase 2 integrates carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology across a total of 45 MW of natural gas compression and power generation facilities. All major construction and equipment commissioning have been completed, with over 250,000 work hours accumulated during project execution without a serious safety incident, safely completing extensive work at height and multiple critical lifts.
Entropy's Chief Executive Officer, Sanjay Bishnoi, stated that the project is a "first-of-its-kind asset" that will provide reliable baseload low-carbon power to customer Advantage Energy Ltd. and sell commercial power to the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) grid. All major unabated emission sources at the Glacier gas processing plant will be treated using Entropy's carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, targeting a carbon dioxide (CO₂) removal rate of over 90%. Including the earlier phase, total carbon capture capacity is designed for 11 gas engines (30 MW) and 1 gas-fired power turbine (15 MW), capturing and storing 192,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually.
The project has installed a 15 MW Solar T130 gas turbine. Entropy has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with Advantage to sell 6 MW of power at a price of $85 per megawatt-hour (MWh). A third-party process engineering company calculated, using a life cycle assessment methodology, that the design-basis carbon intensity of this power is 84 kilograms per megawatt-hour (kg/MWh).
Entropy expects to release verified performance data for the Glacier Phase 2 project in the coming months, which will be measured and reported through EntropyIQ, its real-time carbon measurement, performance, and accounting system. Currently, following commissioning, Entropy is bringing the facility into steady-state operation.
Jarad Daniels, Chief Executive Officer of the Global CCS Institute, stated that the project's success demonstrates that carbon capture and storage (CCS) can simultaneously support climate goals and long-term competitiveness. Entropy's Chief Operating Officer, James Martin, stated that through coordinated scheduling and collaborative teamwork, the team eliminated bottlenecks and successfully installed all interplant connections during a strict three-week turnaround at the Glacier gas processing plant, with zero impact on daily operations.
In terms of the policy framework, Entropy stated that the federal Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Investment Tax Credit (CCUS ITC), the Alberta Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Investment Program (ACCIP), and the Saddle Hills County carbon capture tax incentive bylaws are key components underpinning the project's economics. The company has invested over CAD 250 million in multiple CCS projects across Canada and is currently under review by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), but the review has taken far longer than expected, and no CCUS ITC or ACCIP funds have been received to date.
Entropy focuses on providing large-scale decarbonization solutions for the industrial sector, with its iCCS technology platform and EntropyIQ carbon accounting system designed to make every tonne of captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) measurable, traceable, and financeable. The company has received strategic investments from Advantage Energy Ltd., Brookfield Asset Management, and the Canada Growth Fund.
