en.Wedoany.com Reported - The European Commission has launched an initiative to build multiple artificial intelligence gigafactories, as part of its strategy to expand Europe's AI infrastructure and improve access to high-performance computing for businesses, the scientific community, and public institutions. The program pools €10 billion in public funding from the EU and participating member states, is expected to mobilize at least €20 billion in private investment, bringing total investment to over €30 billion, with plans to build up to seven gigafactories.

The gigafactories will integrate modern AI processors, cloud technology, high-speed networks, and energy-efficient infrastructure. Through this initiative, the EU aims to catch up with the United States and China in the global AI race, reduce dependence on external cloud service providers such as Amazon AWS, Google, and Microsoft, and safeguard Europe's digital and data sovereignty. Germany, in particular, hopes to secure a significant share of this substantial funding.

In Germany, initial plans to involve major domestic technology companies in the form of a "German stock corporation" failed, partly due to the restrained stance of SAP and Siemens. Currently, several German companies have entered the bidding process separately and are thus competing against one another. These include Deutsche Telekom, Schwarz Digits (the IT and digital division of the Schwarz Group, parent company of Lidl and Kaufland), United Internet's cloud service provider Ionos (in partnership with construction group Hochtief), as well as smaller regional players such as Impossible Cloud and Blue Swan.
