en.Wedoany.com Reported - Greenvolt Power's Turosn Koscielna battery energy storage facility near Bialystok in Poland's Podlaskie Voivodeship has been connected to the grid. The project has a grid connection capacity of 200 MW and an energy storage capacity of 800 MWh, connected to Poland's national transmission grid at 110 kV.
The project draws electricity from the grid when supply is abundant and feeds it back when demand rises, helping to balance Poland's national power system, provide ancillary services, and support the integration of weather-dependent renewable energy generation. From 2028, the project will participate in the capacity market under a 17-year contract, with a capacity obligation of 170 MW, equivalent to 85% of the facility's rated power. Poland's energy storage market is expanding: in the main auction for the 2028 delivery year, 33 electrochemical storage facilities secured contracts, with a total capacity obligation exceeding 1.7 GW, with storage facilities accounting for 15% of contracted capacity. As solar and wind power capacity grows, demand is rising for storage solutions capable of shifting electricity across time periods and responding rapidly to changes in generation and load. This project can switch operating modes based on system requirements, enhancing system flexibility and reducing the risk of renewable energy curtailment.
The facility consists of 196 containerized battery modules and 49 containerized transformer stations, employing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology, capable of responding to system operator signals within seconds—faster than conventional power plants. The durability and charge-discharge efficiency of the cells support an expected operational lifespan exceeding 20 years. Supporting infrastructure includes monitoring and protection systems, fire safety solutions, and acoustic barriers; the project site covers approximately 35,000 square meters, of which over 25,000 square meters is biologically active land, accounting for more than 70% of the total area. The project has completed environmental and social assessments in accordance with the standards of the International Finance Corp. and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
P&Q serves as the general contractor, with BYD Energy Storage providing the battery technology. Greenvolt Power is also constructing the Elk project in the Warminsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship, identical in scale to Turosn Koscielna at 200 MW/800 MWh, with commercial operation planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Together, the two projects will provide 400 MW of power and 1.6 GWh of storage capacity. The company is also developing the Siedlce project, with a planned rated power of 600 MW and storage capacity of 2.4 GWh, which upon completion will become one of Poland's largest and Europe's largest battery energy storage projects. Last month, Hungary's Buj BESS (99.8 MW/288.6 MWh) was commissioned, making it the largest operational storage facility in Hungary.
João Manso Neto, Chief Executive Officer of Greenvolt Group, stated that as power systems become increasingly electrified and powered by renewable energy, flexibility is becoming a key element in the energy transition; Poland is an important market for utility-scale storage, and this project consolidates Greenvolt Power's position in the energy storage sector. Weronika Nowak, Chief Executive Officer of Greenvolt Power, stated that the Turosn Koscielna project demonstrates that utility-scale energy storage is becoming a tangible component of Poland's power system, and the company is advancing the Elk project and developing the Siedlce project to scale up its battery storage operations in Poland.
Greenvolt Power has a diversified project pipeline with a probability-weighted total scale of 12.8 GW, covering onshore wind, solar, and battery storage, of which battery storage projects account for 5 GW, with development spanning 13 countries. In Poland, as of the end of June 2026, its portfolio includes 2,595 MW of storage projects, 657 MW of photovoltaic projects, and 238 MW of wind projects. Greenvolt expects to invest approximately €800 million in Polish renewable energy assets by the end of 2026.
