South Africa's Koruson 2 cluster commissioned, 520 MW with total investment of R16 billion

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Envusa Energy's 520 MW Koruson 2 renewable energy cluster is now fully operational. Of this, 130 MW of the 140 MW Hartebeesthoek Wind Farm has entered commercial operation, with the remaining 10 MW scheduled to be connected to the grid in September.

Located in South Africa's Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces, the cluster represents a total investment of R16 billion and comprises two 140 MW wind farms, Umsobomvu and Hartebeesthoek, as well as a 240 MW Mooi Plaats solar photovoltaic plant.

In terms of equipment scale, the cluster deploys approximately 50 wind turbines, 420,000 solar panels, and 943 string inverters.

The electricity generated has been connected to the national grid. Envusa Energy, as a licensed electricity trader, has signed agreements to offtake this power to supply the operations of Valterra Platinum, Kumba Iron Ore, and De Beers.

Nicole Mason, CEO of Envusa Energy, stated that the Koruson 2 cluster demonstrates the company's ability to deliver its business model at scale. The company, established in 2022 by Anglo American and EDF power solutions, operates on a model where multiple renewable energy generators supply multiple industrial customers through a licensed electricity trader, utilizing the transmission network of the National Transmission Company South Africa.

Mason also noted that the company is advancing its next batch of wind projects with a total installed capacity of 340 MW, targeting financial close in the first quarter of 2027 and commercial operation in 2029. By 2030, Envusa Energy plans to develop 3 GW to 5 GW of wind, solar, and battery energy storage capacity in Southern Africa.
