GM's Cadillac OPTIQ Adopts Hydro's 75% Recycled Aluminum Bumper

en.Wedoany.com Reported - General Motors (GM) is incorporating a new bumper system made from recycled aluminum in its Cadillac OPTIQ electric vehicle, marking the first time Hydro CIRCAL recycled aluminum alloy has been used in structural and safety-critical automotive applications in the United States. Developed by Hydro Aluminum Metal, Hydro CIRCAL contains 75% post-consumer scrap, as verified by DNV, an independent certification body. The bumper system is manufactured entirely in Michigan: Hydro supplies the recycled aluminum from its newest recycling facility in Cassopolis, Shape Corp. handles the design and assembly of the bumper system in Grand Haven, and GM integrates it into the Cadillac OPTIQ EV platform in Detroit.

The bumper beam is a structural crash-management component located at the front of the vehicle, behind the visible bumper cover, designed to absorb and distribute impact energy during a collision to protect occupants, pedestrians, and critical EV systems. This component demands stringent material performance, including strength, energy absorption, corrosion resistance, and formability. The use of Hydro CIRCAL in the Cadillac OPTIQ demonstrates that aluminum with high post-consumer recycled content can meet automakers' rigorous requirements in these areas.

Hydro CIRCAL is sourced from end-of-life products, including old cars, windows, doors, and cables. Independently verified by DNV to contain 75% post-consumer scrap, its traceability supports automakers' sustainability reporting. The product has a carbon footprint of 1.5 kg CO₂ equivalent per kilogram of aluminum (or less), representing an expected 70% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to the average for primary aluminum production in North America.

Duncan Pitchford, Vice President of Recycling at Hydro Aluminum Metal, stated that Michigan, which once shaped the automotive era, is now building the next-generation automotive supply chain through circular economy practices involving locally sourced recycled aluminum and local manufacturing, enhancing U.S. production and supply chain resilience while reducing dependence on foreign materials. The front bumper system combines local craftsmanship with circular materials, channeling old aluminum into safety-critical structural components of next-generation vehicles and keeping American scrap within the U.S. value chain.
