Wedoany.com Report-Jun 5, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), a German logistics company, has announced plans to invest in a new terminal in Ukraine by acquiring a 60% stake in the Eurobridge Intermodal Terminal in Batiovo, located in western Ukraine. This strategic move strengthens HHLA’s position as a key player in European rail freight transport and establishes Ukraine as a vital hub for continental container logistics.

The Batiovo terminal, to be operated as HHLA Eurobridge Batiovo, is a joint venture between HHLA International and Fortior Capital, a Ukrainian investment company. HHLA will collaborate with its rail subsidiary, Metrans, to further develop the facility. Positioned near the EU border at the intersection of multiple international railway corridors, the terminal serves as a critical link for freight traffic connecting Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia.

Equipped with access to both standard and broad-gauge tracks, the terminal facilitates seamless integration between European and Ukrainian logistics networks. In its initial phase, it is designed to handle approximately 100,000 TEU annually, accommodating containers, grain, and other general cargo. HHLA notes that the terminal’s capacity can be expanded based on future demand.

Philip Sweens, managing director of HHLA International, stated: “Container operations are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2025. At the same time, we are expanding our service portfolio to offer customers comprehensive, efficient and sustainable logistics solutions.” This investment builds on HHLA’s existing operations in Ukraine, including the HHLA Container Terminal in Odessa and the rail operator UIC Ukraine Intermodal Company.

The partnership enhances connectivity along major transport corridors, linking the North Sea and Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. It supports efficient logistics solutions for customers by improving access to ports and streamlining freight movement across regions.

HHLA’s investment follows recent activity in Ukraine’s logistics sector. In late 2024, MSC, the world’s largest liner, acquired a 50% stake in Ukrainian intermodal logistics operator N’UNIT and a 25% stake in the Mostyska cross-border terminal through its inland cargo business, Medlog. MSC also holds a 49.9% stake in HHLA, with the city of Hamburg owning the remaining 50.1%, a deal finalized in November 2024.

This initiative reflects HHLA’s commitment to expanding its logistics network in Ukraine, leveraging strategic locations and partnerships to enhance freight transport efficiency. The Batiovo terminal strengthens regional connectivity and supports sustainable logistics solutions for diverse cargo types.
