Samsung Electronics Invests 240 Billion KRW to Build AI Liquid Cooling Equipment Production Line
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 19, Samsung Electronics signed an investment agreement with the Gwangju local government and FläktGroup Korea, planning to invest approximately 240 billion KRW to build a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) production line at the third complex of Samsung Electronics' Gwangju plant. The total floor area of the facility is approximately 21,800 square meters, with operations expected to begin in early 2028. This marks the first large-scale production facility investment in Gwangju in 37 years since Samsung Electronics established its Gwangju plant in 1989.
The new production line will focus on manufacturing coolant distribution units (CDUs) for AI data centers. Positioned between chillers and server cold plates, CDUs regulate coolant temperature and pressure, filter impurities, and transfer heat generated by server chips to cooling facilities, making them essential components of high-density server liquid cooling systems. As AI server power and heat dissipation density increase, Samsung Electronics is expanding the scope of its Gwangju plant from home appliances to central air conditioning and precision cooling equipment for data centers.
In addition to CDUs, the Gwangju production line will also manufacture fan wall units (FWUs), computer room air handling units (CRAHs), and air handling units (AHUs). Among these, FWUs use multiple fan arrays to centrally manage heat in server rooms, CRAHs control air temperature in computer rooms, and AHUs primarily handle air cooling and circulation for large buildings and data centers. Once operational, the Gwangju facility will become FläktGroup's 15th production facility worldwide, supplying products to AI data centers, advanced manufacturing facilities, and large commercial building customers in South Korea and overseas.
Samsung Electronics signed an agreement in May 2025 to acquire all shares of FläktGroup for 1.5 billion euros, completing the transaction in November of the same year. FläktGroup primarily provides central air conditioning, precision cooling, and liquid cooling solutions for data centers, hospitals, and large commercial facilities, with production and service networks across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and Asia. The Gwangju investment is a concrete project to deploy FläktGroup's production capabilities in South Korea following Samsung's acquisition.
Prior to the Gwangju project, FläktGroup had already completed an HVAC production line in Pune, India, in August, covering approximately 13,800 square meters. Once fully operational, it can produce up to 6,500 units annually, supplying AHUs, FWUs, and CRAHs to the Indian and Asia-Pacific markets. Samsung Electronics has thus established two new production nodes—Gwangju in South Korea and Pune in India—to respectively address regional demand for AI data center liquid cooling, central air conditioning, and precision cooling equipment.
