Portugal's Continente Collects Used Paper, Aims for 100 Tons to Plant 2,000 Trees
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Continente has once again launched its "Cadernão" initiative for the back-to-school season, partnering with the Oxford brand to combine the recycling of old school notebooks and waste paper with the circular economy and reforestation. The campaign runs until September 20th, during which consumers can deposit school notebooks and waste paper of any brand at the Ecospots in designated Continente stores; for every ton of paper collected, 20 trees will be planted. Continente's goal is to collect 100 tons of paper during the campaign period ending September 20th, equivalent to planting 2,000 trees across Portugal.

As for the drop-off method, stores equipped with Ecospots accept direct deposits; stores without Ecospots use the in-store "Cadernão" trolleys commonly found on the premises. The recycling scope covers notebooks and paper of any brand, including paper covers, plastic, metal rings, staples, or loose sheets. To date, the project has helped give 337 tons of paper a second life and has pledged to plant 6,740 trees, of which 5,120 have already been planted, with the remaining 1,620 corresponding to the 81 tons of paper collected in 2025, earmarked for tree-planting activities that already include the results of this year's edition.
In 2026, Continente aims to further expand the impact of this initiative, once again calling on families to start the new school year in a more conscious and sustainable way. The "Cadernão" program is also integrated into the Back-to-School Fair (Feira de Regresso às Aulas), reflecting Continente's commitment to implementing sustainable measures and creating a positive footprint for future generations.
