Micron Plans $10 Billion Memory Research Lab in the U.S., Breaking Ground in 2027

The new research organization will be headquartered in Boise, Idaho, with a focus on advanced memory technology, computing architectures, packaging, and future semiconductor manufacturing.

Micron expects the facility to house hundreds of researchers and support exploratory work beyond the current technology roadmap. According to the plan, this research hub will bring together participants from industry, academia, government, and the broader semiconductor sector to advance progress in key areas related to memory and artificial intelligence. The planned investment will be used for the Boise flagship campus, satellite laboratories, university partnerships, and broader ecosystem collaboration.

Micron plans to begin construction of the facility in Boise in 2027, with the site also serving as a venue for research conferences, workshops, and innovation forums in the future.

Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron's chairman, president, and CEO, stated that with the planned $10 billion investment in Micron Research Labs, the company is looking toward the memory and computing systems needed in the future, bringing together top talent from academia, government, startups, and industry. He noted that this initiative builds on Micron's more than $250 billion in previously committed investments in U.S. manufacturing and research and development (R&D), and that as the only U.S.-based memory manufacturer, Micron believes in the future that artificial intelligence is now enabling.

Micron described the new lab as the first dedicated memory research hub of its kind in the United States, stating that it will operate in coordination with the company's existing research and manufacturing activities in the U.S., Japan, Europe, Singapore, India, and Taiwan, China. The company hopes to accelerate the development of new technologies by engaging both internal researchers and external experts.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated that Micron's announcement of the first dedicated memory research lab and its $10 billion investment in memory research will strengthen American innovation, create hundreds of jobs, and ensure that memory never limits innovation. In July, Micron also revealed plans to invest up to $3 billion to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain.
