Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications Acquires 1,882.79 m² of Land for Airport Expansion
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications reported on August 25 that it has completed the handover and reception of a plot of land required for the expansion of the Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón International Airport in Arequipa. The plot, covering an area of 1,882.79 square meters, is located in the Villa Las Canteras community, Cerro Colorado district, Arequipa province, and will be used for airport expansion and infrastructure improvement works.

The land handover was confirmed through a document signed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Cerro Colorado district government. The plot has been cleared of occupants and any ground-level structures that could restrict construction. The relevant procedures were carried out in accordance with Agreement No. 061-2025-MTC/19 signed by both parties, as well as Peru's regulations on land expropriation, transfer of state assets, and removal of infrastructure obstacles.
This plot is part of the land required under the airport's master development plan. The plan was approved in 2015 and updated in 2021. Peru's National Superintendency of State Assets approved the subdivision and intergovernmental transfer of the plot in 2019, after which the land was registered under the name of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. This physical handover completes the land acquisition process.
The airport is operated by Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú. The company signed an amendment to its concession contract with the Ministry of Transport and Communications in March 2026, planning to invest more than US$67 million in the Arequipa airport, including over US$35 million for terminal expansion and approximately US$32 million for the construction of a new airport perimeter fence. The amendment does not extend the existing concession term, and the operating rights will still expire in 2036.
Upon completion of the terminal expansion, the airport's passenger handling capacity is planned to double. The airport handled more than 2.4 million passengers in 2025, and the operator expects this figure to approach 2.6 million in 2026. This land handover provides a site with completed title registration and on-site delivery for the subsequent expansion and improvement works.
