BioBTX Advances Commercialization of Waste Plastic-to-Aromatics Technology

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Recently, BioBTX, a Dutch developer of circular chemical technologies, made a final investment decision to build the world's first commercial-scale plant at the Delfzijl chemical park in the northern Netherlands. The facility will utilize the company's proprietary Integrated Catalytic Cracking Process (ICCP) technology to convert mixed plastic waste into high-quality aromatics, marking the technology's official transition into the commercial execution phase after 14 years of research and development.

The plant is expected to process approximately 20,000 tonnes of mixed plastic waste annually that would otherwise be incinerated or landfilled, producing around 10,000 tonnes of benzene, toluene, and xylene per year through catalytic pyrolysis, along with 8,000 tonnes of sustainable by-products. Xylene is a key foundational feedstock for coatings, pharmaceuticals, and high-performance materials, and can also be used in Covestro's isocyanate production, which in turn is used to manufacture flexible foam for mattresses or rigid foam for refrigerator insulation. Compared with traditional fossil-based BTX production, this process can reduce the full lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of the products by 70% to 80%.

German materials manufacturer Covestro has been a shareholder and strategic partner of BioBTX since 2024, holding an equity stake worth several million euros. Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer of Covestro, stated that this technology processes mixed plastic waste rather than single-stream sorted materials, which is precisely what is urgently needed to achieve circular economy at scale. Ton Vries, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of BioBTX, noted that the ICCP technology offers feedstock flexibility and can be expanded to other sources such as biomass in the future.
