U.S. FORGE Launches Four-Month Enhanced Geothermal System Test in Utah
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) this month launched a four-month enhanced geothermal system (EGS) test in Utah, USA, to reduce technical risks and validate commercial viability. FORGE is managed by the University of Utah, with research funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The test, dubbed the "extended circulation" experiment, was announced on August 12. Under the plan, the FORGE team will "evaluate reservoir performance under continuous flow conditions" over a 90-day period (extendable to 120 days if necessary). The test is seen as a critical milestone on the path to commercialization for enhanced geothermal systems, with only a handful of EGS projects worldwide having advanced to this stage. The U.S. Department of Energy stated that this test is the culmination of years of federally funded work and could become one of the most significant steps in advancing EGS development.
FORGE Principal Investigator Kristie McLin said the team hopes to capture through this test "variables that have been unknown to date and that are necessary to ensure long-term EGS production remains commercially viable." She acknowledged that despite considerable progress over the past few years, much remains unknown in the industry regarding thermal breakthrough and water loss over time.
Enhanced geothermal systems overall remain in the early stages of commercialization. EGS startup Fervo Energy's 500-megawatt Cape Station project in Beaver County, Utah—the first commercial-scale EGS project in the United States—is expected to begin supplying power to the grid later this year.
Fervo Energy went public in May of this year through an initial public offering (IPO), with its share price down 56% from its post-IPO high. Jefferies equity analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith noted in an August 14 research report that Fervo stated on its second-quarter earnings call that "new but temporary transmission-related curtailment issues emerged in 2027, prompting us to lower our FY2027 revenue estimate from $79 million to $63 million."
Fervo Chief Financial Officer David Ulrey said on the call that some factors in the project are within control while others are beyond it, "which is not new for power development, nor is it unique to Fervo... We feel very good about the things we can control. Our ability to drill hotter, faster, deeper, and cheaper is a massive mitigant to many of the items on our risk list."
McLin said the positive results FORGE has achieved over the past few years have been helpful to the industry, but there are still many unknowns to resolve. This extended circulation test will answer pressing questions about thermal drawdown and water loss, enabling geothermal companies to continue to grow and thrive.
