Greece's METLEN Advances Battery Energy Storage Projects in UK, Italy, and Greece
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Greek energy company METLEN is simultaneously advancing projects in the battery energy storage sector across the UK, Italy, and Greece, covering areas such as balance of plant contracting, project financing, grid connection, and project completion.
In the UK, METLEN has signed a balance of plant (BoP) contract with battery energy storage developer Pulse Clean Energy for the Penn BESS project in the West Midlands. The project has an installed capacity of 129 MW and a battery capacity of 362 MWh, making it the largest energy storage project METLEN has undertaken in the UK to date by storage capacity. The scope of works also includes grid connection engineering. The site is expected to be energized by the end of 2027.
Pulse Clean Energy is a rapidly growing UK-based battery energy storage developer and operator with an expanding project pipeline, supporting the decarbonization of the power system and the greater integration of renewable energy generation. The company's battery energy storage facilities total 400 MWh in capacity, with an additional 400 MWh under construction, and plans to reach 2 GWh by 2030. METLEN has delivered or has under construction approximately 30 battery energy storage units in the UK (including hybrid/co-located solar and battery projects), with a total storage capacity approaching 2 GWh, partnering with a range of leading companies.
In Italy, METLEN has secured €18 million in long-term financing for a 25 MW/75 MWh BESS project in the province of Brindisi, Apulia. The project became fully operational during the year and has entered into a seven-year physical tolling agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group. This financing agreement is among the first of its kind in the Italian energy storage market.
In Greece, the battery energy storage unit developed by METLEN in partnership with Karatzis Group of Companies in the Thessaly region, with a capacity of 330 MW and a battery installed capacity of 790 MWh, is the largest standalone battery energy storage unit planned in Greece to date and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The unit's power transmission has now been connected to the national electricity transmission system, marking a key step toward full operation and participation in grid services.
In the same period, a 48 MW/96 MWh battery energy storage project in Polygyros, Halkidiki, Central Macedonia, was recently completed. The project, named Aenaos, is implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan Greece 2.0, with funding from the EU/NextGenerationEU.
