South Africa's Stage Zero delivers 100 kW solar-plus-storage system for Addo reserve
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Distributed energy company Stage Zero has completed the installation of a 100 kW solar PV and battery energy storage system at the Addo Wildlife private game reserve in the Eastern Cape. The project reduces the reserve's reliance on grid electricity and its energy costs, while improving power supply continuity for lodge facilities and daily operations.
The system generates solar power during the day, stores excess energy in batteries for later use, and draws supplementary power from the grid when needed. Stage Zero stated that this configuration gives the reserve greater autonomy over its electricity sources and usage patterns, gradually reducing dependence on grid supply.
On-site solar generation has already exceeded the site's daytime electricity demand, with stored energy supporting nighttime loads and critical power supply during grid outages. The company noted that the facility helps the reserve manage electricity costs more stably and reduces its vulnerability to energy system risks such as load-shedding and tariff increases.
The installation also aligns with Addo Wildlife's commitment to responsible tourism and environmental conservation. Increasing the share of on-site solar generation in the overall energy mix not only reduces reliance on conventional grid supply but also offers visitors a more resilient experience that reflects the destination's environmental character.
Shaune Bouwer, commercial engineer at Stage Zero, said: "Tourism operations require energy systems that match how the site actually functions. At Addo Wildlife, the system had to support the daily rhythm of a working lodge and reserve, with demands that go far beyond daylight hours." He added that solar generation, battery storage, and grid supply now operate in tandem as a unified, managed energy solution.
Bouwer stated that Stage Zero designed the system around Addo Wildlife's actual energy needs and continues to provide technical support, assisting the reserve in maintaining the facility and sustaining system performance over the long term.
The project also reflects a broader shift in energy decision-making within the tourism sector, where cost control, operational continuity, and sustainability are increasingly central to energy solution choices. For lodges and hospitality businesses, the stronger business case often comes from addressing these pressures as a single operational challenge rather than pursuing fragmented, piecemeal solutions.
"Energy resilience in tourism is fundamentally about safeguarding the operations behind the guest experience. When systems are designed around real needs, businesses can use more solar power, reduce grid dependence, and operate with greater confidence," Bouwer said.
