Virgin Australia expects to take delivery of 5 Boeing 737-8s in FY2027

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Virgin Australia expects to complete the delivery of its Boeing 737-8 aircraft during the 2027 fiscal year, which begins on July 1. With new aircraft deliveries offset by retirements, its mainline narrowbody fleet will remain at 104 aircraft by the end of FY2027, a total that excludes domestic wet-leased aircraft.

Virgin Australia disclosed at its annual results briefing that it expects to receive five 737-8s in FY2027, the final aircraft of that type on order. The airline also holds orders for ten 737-10s, which are expected to be delivered in the first half of FY2028—later in the 2027 calendar year.

Virgin Australia plans to phase out five 737-800s during FY2027. As deliveries progress, the mix of new and older aircraft will improve, with the fleet expected to consist of 26 737-8s and 78 737NGs by the end of FY2027.

Virgin Australia's regional and charter division—Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA)—expects to take delivery of two Embraer E190-E2s in FY2027, while retiring three Airbus A320s due for return under lease agreements. By the end of the fiscal year, the VARA fleet will consist of six E190-E2s.

On capacity, Virgin Australia plans to cut domestic capacity by 3% in FY2027. In FY2026, the airline grew domestic capacity by 2.9% and reduced international capacity by 4.5%. Virgin Australia primarily operates domestic routes, with only a limited number of short-haul international services. The airline took delivery of 17 aircraft in FY2026, including 13 737-8s and four E190-E2s.

Financially, Virgin Australia reported a net profit of AUD 501 million (USD 360 million) for FY2026, up 4.7% from the prior year. Chief Executive Dave Emerson said the results demonstrate that the airline has become "a stronger and more resilient airline" since its relaunch following the pandemic. He said the company's strategy is working, having built a simpler, more focused business that primarily operates a domestic route network, offers targeted short-haul international services, and achieves global connectivity through airline partnerships.
