United Airlines to Launch Direct San Francisco–Okinawa Flights in March 2027, Three Times Weekly

en.Wedoany.com Reported - United Airlines earlier this week unveiled additions to its long-haul route network for summer 2027, with most new routes being transatlantic flights from major East Coast hubs to Europe; for San Francisco International Airport (SFO), the carrier added a new transpacific route to Okinawa, Japan. The route is scheduled to launch on March 27, 2027, operating three times weekly with Boeing 777-200ER wide-body twin-engine jets, making United the only U.S. airline to operate this nonstop route upon launch.

Okinawa will become the sixth destination in United's Japan network. According to AeroRoutes data, flight UA833 departs San Francisco at 10:35 on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, arriving in Okinawa at 15:50 the following day; the return flight UA834, after a two-hour turnaround, departs Okinawa at 17:50 local time and arrives back in San Francisco at 12:50 the same day. Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, said that over the past decade, United has added flights to nearly 60 new international cities, building a broad global network that leads travel trends and inspires travelers to explore new destinations.

The San Francisco hub's transpacific route picture for next summer is equally busy.

Aviation analytics firm Cirium data shows that next summer, United will operate 11 transpacific nonstop routes from San Francisco to East Asian cities; Hong Kong, Manila, Seoul Incheon, Singapore, and Taipei will see the highest service frequencies, each at twice daily. Among them, the Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) route features the premium "Elevated" cabin configuration on select Boeing 787-9 wide-body twin-engine jets, with 222 seats total—64 in business class, 35 in premium economy, and 123 in economy.

Additionally, next summer United will operate daily flights from its San Francisco hub to five destinations: Beijing, Shanghai, Osaka, Tokyo Haneda, and Tokyo Narita. Passengers on the Narita route can connect at Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) to Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) in Taiwan.

United also announced a seasonal winter route operating between San Francisco and Sapporo's New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Japan.

The route was disclosed in May this year, planned to operate three times weekly starting December 11, as a seasonal service only, and will not be included in the summer 2027 schedule. United said the route aims to serve winter sports travelers, meeting their demand to experience "world-class powder snow." In terms of aircraft, the carrier is considering using the Boeing 787 for the route and noted that travelers can connect from 80 U.S. cities via San Francisco.
