Quantum Foundry Copenhagen to Build 5,300 sqm Chip Facility in Copenhagen, Denmark, Operational by 2027
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Technology company Quantum Foundry Copenhagen, in partnership with the Novo Nordisk Foundation, has announced the construction of a 5,300-square-meter commercial quantum chip manufacturing facility in Copenhagen, Denmark, slated to begin operations in 2027. Positioned as an intermediate platform bridging academic research and industrial manufacturing, the facility will offer commercial wafer fabrication, characterization, assembly, and packaging services to quantum technology suppliers worldwide.

European research centers maintain a strong scientific output in quantum physics, yet the scalable expansion of physical hardware relies on specialized commercial-grade semiconductor equipment and high-purity material growth capabilities. The manufacturing facility under construction targets precisely these two bottlenecks.
According to the plan, the production line will employ ultra-high vacuum (UHV) nanofabrication processes to grow and synthesize high-purity quantum materials from the bottom up with atomic-level precision, minimizing defect densities that cause decoherence in physical qubits. Meanwhile, the nanofabrication cleanroom will integrate advanced material characterization, automated chip testing, assembly, and packaging, supporting the scalable production of central processing units for quantum systems.
In terms of operational model, the facility will serve as an open commercial foundry platform, offering contract wafer fabrication services across multiple qubit modalities to external quantum hardware startups, industrial partners, and research institutions.
The construction of this facility is included in the Novo Nordisk Foundation's total quantum technology investment of DKK 2.9 billion (EUR 390 million) and is planned to operate in coordination with the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP) at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. The program aims to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2034.
The above initiatives also align with EU-level industrial policies, including the EU Chips Act, the Quantum Europe Strategy, and the forthcoming European Quantum Act, aimed at strengthening Europe's regional manufacturing capabilities in critical semiconductors and quantum components.
